2017 -18 Season Announced:This season Pacific Northwest Opera presents two of the most famous and beloved melodies in the opera world: the Barcarolle from the Tales of Hoffmann and "Nessun Dorma" from Turandot. Both operas are based on collections of fantastical tales and both were the final operas of prolific composers, neither of whom lived to see their operas produced.
Tales of Hoffman by Jacques Offenbach
French composer, Jacques Offenbach, noted more for his sparkling operettas, based The Tales of Hoffman on three fantastical stories ("tales") by German Romantic poet E.T.A. Hoffmann, author of "The Nutcracker". Offenbach’s music, both intensely witty and intensely dramatic, is the perfect vehicle to present the Romantic, richly imaginative world of the storyteller E.T.A. Hoffmann, combining fantasy, gravity and comedy. Sung in the original French with English subtitles.
Friday evenings: October 29 and November 5, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday matinees: October 31 and November 7 at 3:00 p.m.
Turandot by Giacomo Puccini
Based on an ancient Chinese tale, Turandot is an epic masterpiece of revenge, power and love. The vengeful princess Turandot has decreed that she will marry only a royal suitor who can answer her three riddles and those that fail will lose their heads -- and many have. The tartar prince Calaf, filled with the fire of heroes and bewitched by her beauty, is determined to try -- and succeeds but not without tragedy. Giacomo Puccini's final opera is filled with passion and soaring melodies. Sung in original Italian with English subtitles.
