By Vincenzo Bellini

Think of Norma as the Druid version of Aida: two women who are friends discover they are in love with the same man. With its ferocious vocal and dramatic demands, Norma is one of the most difficult roles in opera. Composed by Bellini, a leading composer of the early 19th century Italian Bel Canto -- literally "beautiful singing"-- style, it was one of Maria Callas' favorite and most famous roles and is the  supreme test for a fiercely intense, formidable soprano.
