2015-2016 Season

Skagit Opera's 2015-2016 season features "Patrons Picks," the result of having canvassed some of our most loyal patrons as to their favorite operas. Coincidentally, both operas have connections to the great German Romantic composer, Richard Wagner. Opening Night Gala Dinner & Auction Celebrate with us opening night at McIntyre Hall with a special catered theme dinner and auction of the paintings by Susan Bennerstrom from which our set design was based. The proceeds for this dinner and auction help support Skagit Opera.  Tickets are $75 each.  Dinner includes salad, main course, dessert and wine.  Menu and evening schedule listed below.

Hansel and Gretel

Engelbert Humperdinck, sung in English Performed at McIntyre Hall Based on the classic tale by the Brother's Grimm, Hansel and Gretel has often been treated as a "children's opera." The music is anything but. Humperdinck was a student of Richard Wagner, and while Hansel and Gretel contains many recognizable tunes, chief among them "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep," these simple tunes are propelled by a lush orchestration evocative of Wagner's powerful romanticism presented in a very accessible form. It is an ideal first opera for any age, and the music will thrill even the veteran opera goer. Our production is moved from the Bavarian Alps to the Mount Baker wilderness, based on paintings for the production by Susan Bennerstrom. The opera is sung in English. Running time is 2 hours 30 minutes November 6, Friday at 7:30pm - Gala Dinner at 6:00pm November 8, Sunday at 3:00pm November 13, Friday at 7:30pm November 15, Sunday at 3:00pm

Cosi Fan Tutte

By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Concert Performance at Lairmont Manor, Bellingham Mozart's Così fan Tutte is a comic tale of two young men convinced to play a cruel joke on their financeés, employing their cynical older (and supposedly, wiser) friend to prove that women cannot remain faithful. The great genius of Mozart’s music is that it at once mocks and transforms the superficial comedy of Da Ponte’s libretto. The beauty of the music, whether in moments of wild parody or heartfelt emotion, is simply splendid. This concert version of Cosi fan Tutte will be performed, as was last season's sold-out Magic Flute, in the intimate setting of Bellingham's Lairmont Manor and will include a champagne tea. Running time is 3 hours January 17, Sunday at 3:00pm Tickets can purchased by sending a check to Skagit Opera, PO Box 1756, Mount Vernon, WA 98273 or by calling 360-610-7249 to charge tickets. Tickets for this very special event are $100 and include a champagne tea and reception with the artists. Last year this performance was completely sold out despite being on the day of Seahawks overtime victory over Green Bay in the playoffs.

By Vincenzo Bellini, sung in Italian with English supertitles Performed at McIntyre Hall Who ever heard of an opera called "Norma"? Richard Wagner, for one. After conducting it in 1837, Wagner said he considered Norma "the most perfect example of a musical tragedy" and "If we weep from emotion on hearing it, it is nothing to be ashamed of." Think of Norma as the Druid Aida: two women who are friends discover they are in love with the same man. With its ferocious vocal and dramatic demands, Norma is one of the most difficult roles in opera. Composed by Bellini, a leading composer of the early 19th century Italian Bel Canto -- literally "beautiful singing"-- style, it was one of Maria Callas' favorite and most famous roles. The opera is sung in Italian with English supertitles. Running time is TBD April 8, Friday at 7:30pm - Gala Dinner at 6:00pm April 10, Sunday at 3:00pm April 15, Friday at 7:30pm April 17, Sunday at 3:00pm
